Franklin Pierce (1804-1869) was the 14th President of the United States. His personal life was struck by tragedy all of his life. One of his sons was killed in a railroad accident just weeks before he was sworn in. He had a Christmas tree installed in the White House. After losing the Democratic Presidential nomination, he returned home. He was the first President born in the 19th century.
