James K. Polk (1795-1849) was the 11th President of the United States. He was known for his long work days and he had a set of gaslights installed in the White House so he could work overnight. He emerged as a "dark horse" candidate in the 1844 Presidential election. He was President during the Mexican War. He promised to serve one term and he died the same year he left office.
